With May upon us, the spring lends itself to daydreams of summer days ahead and the successful conclusion of the school year. It is not uncommon that during this time of year friends will casually comment to me in my role as a school principal, “I bet it’s all starting to really wind down now?” “Nope,” I respond and then proceed to kindly share the whirlwind of necessary administrative tasks and responsibilities that lay the groundwork for a healthy school year ahead.
May, in particular, is a month that marks much thoughtful work as it relates to teachers’ placement of their students for the subsequent school year. On occasion, I remind parents that I only review these placements with each grade-level team after teachers have placed their students and the process is close to being formalized. While I peruse the many parent input forms that are submitted, it is ultimately the child’s teacher who has the best sense of the most appropriate placement for the student for the following year. Often, these placement decisions are influenced by the healthy conversations that a parent may have with their child’s teacher for the subsequent year. In turn, any specific information that is shared with a child’s teacher must be communicated in writing on the parent-input form. It is never appropriate to make a specific request for placement based on another child’s experience who is not one’s own. Certainly requesting a different experience for a younger child than their older sibling had with a specific teacher is warranted, but requests based on conjecture that may be influenced by one’s social network are simply unfair.
We have long enjoyed communicating class placement for the following school year on the last day of school. Once placements are communicated decisions are final. Again, we kindly ask that you ensure the completion of the parent-input form if there are any specific considerations we should be aware of.

A Message from our Garden Educator
Our school garden, located on the south side of the school building, has long enjoyed the support of parents, teachers, the PTA, the Haldane School Foundation, and of course, our students. Hands-on learning in this outdoor classroom brings curriculum to life, as students learn with all of their senses. Immersion in nature also feeds the imagination and the spirit.
New this year, the weekly Library/Garden special ensures that all elementary students experience our school garden on a regular basis. Browse-and-borrow in the library stacks continues. Students also read and are read to in the school garden, and explore themes and lessons of literature outdoors.
Please visit www.growinghaldane.com or "like" Growing Haldane on facebook for regular updates about our students' rich experiences in the school garden. Also, visit the school garden often! Ask for a tour! New things happen here every day.
